MARCH ON MILWAUKEE: More than One Struggle

The Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum hosted a new exhibition dedicated to the history of civil rights struggles in Milwaukee. The permanent exhibit of the 1967 open housing marches visually chronicles the history of the movement and allow visitors a glimpse into what it was like to be there. The museum is located on the near north side in the city of Milwaukee and thus local inner-city residents will be able to easily access this important piece of their history.

Clayborn Benson, Executive Director of the museum, also reached out to local school districts and social studies teachers to incorporate field trips to view the exhibit as part of their curriculum on Wisconsin history and the civil rights movement.  In addition to the permanent exhibit, he built a smaller traveling exhibit to take to the public: schools, libraries, and other public venues.  Director Ellsworth Brown of the Wisconsin Historical Society and Director Robert Teske of the Milwaukee County Historical Society have agreed to donate staff, time, and resources to this exhibit project.

The exhibition's opening event took place on Friday evening, September 28th, 2007 from 5:30-8:30pm.
